In Latin, the word “detente” means “release from tension” or “stop”. In 1720, the Sacred Heart detente gained popularity in France during the plague and its use continued when many soldiers took them into battle for protection in subsequent wars and battles. The practice of carrying this Sacred Heart badge or detente was endorsed by Pope Pius IX. At Rue St Blaise, we use vintage Sacred Heart images that are then hand embellished with paint and crochet border. These unique devotional item come in two sizes: a small for carrying in one’s pocket or purse and a larger size for prayerful meditation or bookmark for spiritual reading.
